Negroponte for Nobel Peace Price

The OLPC is one of the greatest innovations in human history. Look at these happy school kids in Uruguay, they will grow up smarter with AMD64 (with Opteron as server platform) and Linux, they will learn coding in Python and other languages.

Some idiots say why not give them $200 worth of bread, instead of a $200 laptop. This is like asking why spend money on public schools -- the money spent on each kid is enough to feed a person from childhood to death. Do the math, if a public school spends $5000 on a kid a year, that is enough money to buy 5000 pounds of junk food to feed a kid for 10 years.

So, looks like the AMD fanboi's are on the retreat and all they have to talk about is the OLPC.

1.) Can't talk about performance, because Intel is very much in the lead.

2.) Can't talk about power consumption because Intel is again very much in the lead.

3.) Can't talk about marketshare, because AMD is losing it and Intel is gaining it.

4.) Can't talk about money, because AMD is losing it and Intel is making it hands over fists.

5.) Can't talk about price/performance as AMD is again, behind Intel.

Not much to talk about is there AMD fanbois.

Sharikou... you DO realize that the NEXT generation of the OLPC (if there even is one) is going to use INTEL chips right? The Silverthorne chips Intel has developed use far less power and are far faster than those 90's Geodes that AMD bought from another company (and you call that innovation??)

You are totally setting yourself up to look even stupider than you already do... GO FOR IT!!

AMD OUT PERFORMS intel AGAIN

AMD stole more market share from other microprocessor vendors like intel, according to third-quarter rankings released Monday from iSuppli.

AMD fared far better than intel, with its share rising by more than the twice the level of Intel's to reach 13.9 percent, up 0.6 of a percentage point from 13.3 percent in the second quarter.

As usual the intel fanboys are in total denial.
AMD is out performing intel as a sales leader.

Greed is not a direction or a destination,
Greed is the opposite of charity,
Greed does not feed or empower,
glued up pentium 3s have no future, intel has no future except as a antique relic manufacturer.

Sharikou (the drooling douchebag):

1. The Geode processor that OLPC uses was NOT developed by AMD, they bought the design from National Semiconductors in the '90's and it has not really gone through much innovation since then.
No 64 bit, no hypertransport, it even uses... an FSB!!! The only good thing you & onemolester can point out for AMD is obsolete by your own standards!

2. That retarded bullshit you spew about "opteron servers" couldn't be farther from the truth. When the OLPC project needed server muscle... they went with INTEL (who is ON THE BOARD OF OLPC!!! WHEN YOU SUPPORT OLPC YOU ARE SAYING INTEL IS SUPERIOR!!).
I don't even know why I bother, but Intel's about face means that Chip and Chimpzilla are now unlikely bedfellows - AMD providing the cheapo silicon in the laptops, while Intel rakes in the cash for the far more lucrative server side of the operation.

So once again, AMD is a useless bottom feeder relying on other people's technologies, while Intel is doing the heavy lifting.

If this is the best you can do right now, then Hector might as well get out the cyanide & Kool-Aid. In your case Sharikou, I'd recommend a 64oz big-gulp just to make sure it works (after all, Hector fucks up everything else).

Once again, our fucking moron of the blog forgot to post, that Intel too gained marketshare...

Oh yeah IF YOU ARE FUCKING GOING TO CUT AND PASTE DO A BETTER JOB:

In the third quarter, Intel accounted for 78.7 percent of global microprocessor revenue, up 0.3 of a percentage point from 78.4 percent in the second quarter.

Thats right nearly 80% of the overall global mircoprocessor market belongs to Intel and they continue to grow.

You also left out the fact that both Intel and AMD's marketshare growth came at the expense of Via and Transmeta. AMD DID NOT TAKE MARKETSHARE FROM INTEL

So oneexpert you ignorant little cut and paste cocksucker, what are you going to cut and paste this time? More information about the OLPC programme?

Phenom has had the odds stacked against it, because of the low clocks at launch. The evidence however suggests that even at low clocks, the Phenom offers a challenge to the Intel Quads. Once AMD get the higher clocked B3 stepping Phenom out, Intel will be left for dust and probably lose significant market share.

AMD are more technically advanced than Intel, I don't care what anyone says. AMD has kept technically moving forward, while Intel more or less follow AMD, or should I say Copy AMD!!. AMD are like the master Guru to Intel and without them Intel would be lost.

OLPC XO HELPS CREATE WORLD PEACE...

A child's view of the $100 laptop

What will a child in the UK make of a laptop designed to help children in the developing world? Rory Cellan-Jones brought an XO home to find out.
In late November I returned from Nigeria with a sample of the XO laptop.

The computer, made by the One Laptop per Child charity, is a robust little machine designed to entertain and educate children while allowing them to learn by themselves.

I knew there was only one person who could review it for me.

The Nine Year-old's View

Enter Rufus Cellan-Jones. He is nine, has far more experience of games consoles than computers, and has strong views on most matters.

"Looks fun," was his only comment when I handed over the small, green and white laptop, explaining that he was the only child in Britain to have one.
But very quickly he was up and running.

All I did was give him the security code for our home wireless network so he could take the XO online. The rest he figured out for himself, as he explains:

Lots of fun

"I just seemed to work it out. It was rather easy. I didn't even need help." Surprise, surprise, his first discovery was a game. "I found Block Party. It's like Tetris. I'm now up to Level 7."

I thought my young games fanatic might stick there but he moved on. "Then I discovered paint. You can use pencils, change the texture, use different sizes of brush."

Even better, there was an animation programme called Etoys.

"That's my favourite. You make things. You can see tutorials and demos. Then you can make a new project. I've made a crazy UFO which you can move."

But Rufus says it isn't just about play.

"I use the calculator - that can be rather useful for sums. You can even browse onto the internet. You can watch and learn stuff. You can write things and it can also remind you which is extremely useful."

What, I asked, does a nine year old need to remind himself about? "Christmas stuff," he said, with an air of mystery.

Social networking

But the real surprise came one evening, when Rufus asked me to explain what his friends were telling him on the laptop.

I thought those imaginary childhood friends from years back must have returned.

But I went and had a look - and it was true - he appeared to be chatting online.

So how had he managed that?

"You go on "neighbourhood", then you go to the chat thing.

You go on Nigeria and you chat to them."

But why, if he was online with the children at the Nigerian school I had visited, were they sending messages in Spanish?

I decided he must be linking up with one of the South American schools taking part in the OLPC project but we still aren't sure quite how that is happening.

Still, Rufus is widening his social circle. " I have three friends. It's nice to talk to them. They don't speak much English but I can understand them." The conversation is not exactly sparkling, but Rufus has learned to say "Hola".

Not a toy

So Rufus is using his laptop to write, paint, make music, explore the internet, and talk to children from other countries.

Because it looks rather like a simple plastic toy, I had thought it might suffer the same fate as the radio-controlled dinosaur or the roller-skates he got last Christmas - enjoyed for a day or two, then ignored.

Instead, it seems to provide enduring fascination.

I had returned from Nigeria not entirely convinced that the XO laptop was quite as wonderful an educational tool as its creators claimed.

I felt that a lot of effort would be needed by hard-pressed teachers before it became more than just a distracting toy for the children to mess around with in class.

But Rufus has changed my mind.

With no help from his Dad, he has learned far more about computers than he knew a couple of weeks ago, and the XO appears to be a more creative tool than the games consoles which occupy rather too much of his time.

The One Laptop Per Child project is struggling to convince developing countries providing computers for children is as important as giving them basic facilities like water or electricity.

Unusually, Rufus does not have an opinion about that controversy, but he does have a verdict on the laptop. "It's great," he says.

From the end users themselves, the XO laptop seems to be a smashing hit.

Intel CSR Director Named to 100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics List

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 12, 2007 – Intel Corporation is at the top of the Corporate Responsibility Officer (CRO) Magazine's Best Corporate Citizen list for technology hardware companies. Also, Dave Stangis, director of corporate responsibility, Intel, was named to Ethisphere Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics list.

"Corporate responsibility is in our DNA at Intel. It's how we conduct our business," said Dave Stangis, Intel director of corporate responsibility. "We are honored to be recognized by people that make a business of defining benchmarks in CSR. AMD's Ruiz didn't get a raise last week

INQ gets it wrong, shocka

By Paul Hales: Monday, 17 December 2007, 5:12 PM

AMD CHIEF, Hector de J Ruiz didn't get a raise last week, despite the fact we said he did.

The chip firm sent us a polite note asking us to clarify the position which we're happy to do.

The document we referred to in our original piece (here) amends and restates Ruiz's terms of employment but doesn't indicate he was given a raise.

The amended agreement is "meant to address IRS regulations," a spokesman told the INQ.

"Perhaps the confusion is caused by the fact that Hector received a raise earlier in the year [May 2006, in fact], but I can assure you," said the spokesman, "that Hector's compensation did not change and he is not receiving a raise."

Our apologies to AMD, to our commenter's, who had a field day after our original story appeared, and to Dr Ruiz who, no doubt, was happy to see he'd got a raise when he logged on to the INQ first thing in the morning, as we assume he normally does, only to get to the office to find we'd got it wrong.

Sorry Hector.

Just more FUD from the intel fanboys.

I have noticed that none of the intel fanboys have commented on the specs. of the OLPC AMD FUSION.

I have noticed no intel supporter has commented on the fact that in the last 3 weeks intel has lost about 6 BILLION dollars in value due there stock nose dive.
Some analysts believe intel will weather the upcoming rough economy better than AMD but I think AMD is leaner and has more expertise on getting by with less than behemoth intel.

The AGENA 9500 and 9600 are really great performance values as is the AMD FUSION GEODE in the XO laptop and the Raon Everun UMPC.

Huawei Advanced TCA Telecom Server Blade. It has a four dual core 55W Opterons in it, and is totally passive. Cooled that is. This is a huge deal, a stable and long term market for AMD, in addition to being potentially quite lucrative. It also has some profound implications about what Huawei is.

So far Intel has been growing on the back fo fast laptop chip sales. Other rivals such as Toshiba were expected to increase by 28 per cent but Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics and Infineon were only going to slightly increase their revenue.

Intel's OLPC moves blighted by the old paranoia

Comment Stupid, destructive and all together wrong

intel STINKS AMD OK

By Charlie Demerjian: Friday, 04 January 2008, 11:11 AM

DEAR INTEL,

Please stop playing stupid power games with OLPC, you are only hurting those in need. It is borderline disgusting to see your little tantrums hurt those who can't defend themselves. Just shut up, put your heads down and do better.

Your quitting of OLPC in a huff is downright stupid. I have used both the Classmate and the OLPC, and from just about every way I view it, the OLPC is a clear winner. This is not to say that a lot of Intel engineers didn't do well with Classmate - and all of those I talk to believe in the mission - but you are slapping them in the face by using them as a weapon.

The OLPC project is not about raking in money or cut-throat competition, it is about getting those without connectivity an entry into the digital world. It is about empowering those without power. It is a non-profit for a reason. Didn't you get this?

By pushing the Classmate, you are doing everything that you should not do. You are dividing a market that needs no division and you look like childish, tantrum-throwing bullies. I know you are better than this, you demonstrate that every day in dozens of markets, so why not this one as well?

What it comes down to is that the OLPC is designed from the ground up to suit its purpose. Classmate is a castrated Windows box that barely gets out of its own way in the best of times. The grand total of its educational abilities can be summed up as: "Load some Windows software if there is any room left on the drive". The OLPC has a 'show source' button for a reason.

In the end, you are taking a knife into a gunfight. The OLPC is made for communications, you took a low-end laptop and removed features until it just about collapsed. Mesh networking? What XP SP is that in again? Classmate comes up woefully short unless you are a bean counter in a cube looking at a spec sheet with a western mindset. This is the wrong way to do things.

What you need to do is overcome your critics, both internal and external, by doing a better job for those in need. If you want to win markets, now and in the future, make a cheaper motherboard, or give it better networking features for the same price. In words I used earlier, shut up and do a better job. Stop being divisive and just do it.

In the end, if you continue on your current path, you will be known as the company that is more interested in marketing a half-baked box with all the cuddliness of a Vistagami tablet than helping people. AMD has the high ground here, and you only have yourselves to blame. Stop the stupidity and get back to work. µ

Greed is not a direction or a destination,
Greed is the opposite of charity,
Greed does not feed or empower,
glued up pentium 3s have no future, intel has no future except as a antique relic manufacturer.

BUY AMD future proof, state of the art, energy saving, hi performance, cpus, platforms and video solutions from the good technology company AMD, OLPC supporters and suppliers.
