Lucas: Intel = Evil Dark Side

See this report. Even I am surprise to see an executive from Lucas Films to call Intel evil.

Intel pratices exlcusionism, which is a form of national socialism.

Nvidia 9800 Series Coming Soon
- In November
By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor

Nvidia 9800 Series Coming Soon
Enlarge picture
For some time now, there have been rumors all over the Web about the general technical specifications of the new generation of Nvidia graphics processing units. According to most hardware websites and related forums like Hyped Hardware, the next generation of Nvidia GPUs will hit the market during November which is not unusual as the graphics manufacturing company has a fall and spring product release
cycle.

The GeForce 9800 series of graphics processing units, GPUs for short, are based on the video processing chip codenamed G92 that is built by the Taiwanese contractor TSMC, using the 65 nanometer fabrication process. The complex architecture of the graphics chip and its capabilities are responsible for the fact that the G92 has over one billion transistors within. Going further than the 8800 series, Nvidia implemented in the G92 chips the second Generation Unified Shader Architecture as well as doubled precision support in the form of the FP64 technologies. As graphics processing units are now known for their parallel computing capabilities, the manufacturing company decided to make good use of them and integrate the GPGPU as a native technology.

Talking about parallel computing capabilities, well, the G92 GPU will hit the one teraflop mark with its shader processing units that comes in a MADD+ADD configuration which translates in 2+1 FLOPS=3 FLOPS per ALU (the shorthand for the arithmetic logic unit). The fully scalar design of the G92 series of GPUs is combined with a 512bit wide memory interface and an extended support for as much as 1GB of GDDR4 graphics memory. Graphics APIs supported are represented by the latest (in fact not yet released) DirectX 10.1 and its open source equivalent, OpenGL 3.0. Other new features of the G92 series are the support for "FREE 4xAA", an audio HDMI compliant chip, a tesselation unit built directly into the graphics core and improved performance and quality output of the AA and AF units.

While pricing for the GeForce 9800 series will vary wildly across the different manufacturers, two price ranges are being shuffled: 549-649 USD for the GeForce 9800 GTX and 399-449 USD for the GeForce 9800 GTS.

ntel Corp. said on Tuesday that it would start production of its new central processing units (CPUs) using new 45nm process technology in late October, less than two months from now. Following the formal opening, the world’s largest chipmaker will unveil new and faster processors in mid-November, a move expected to rise performance bar of computing.

“In 45 days, a new building called ‘Fab 32’ tucked into a sleepy corner of Arizona will come to life. Inside this building a new type of device will be made in incredible numbers,” said Nick Knupffer, a spokesman for Intel wrote in the company’s corporate blog.

Earlier Intel started making its central processing units using 45nm process tech at its development D1D fab in Oregon, however, the development fab cannot manufacture products in high-volume, which is required for mass products.

Intel’s 45nm fabrication process is an innovative production technology that features new Hafnium material with a property called high-k for the transistor gate dielectric, and a new combination of metal materials for the transistor gate electrode. The combination of thinner process technology along with new materials is projected to reduce transistor leakage and increases their performance.

The Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker is projected to ship its first server and high-performance desktop/workstation microprocessors made using 45nm process technology for revenue this year and even formally unveil it late in 2007 too. Potentially, the new 45nm central processing units represent a threat for the new breed of chips from Advanced Micro Devices, who is known for relatively slow volume ramps of its innovative chips.

Intel announced in March that the new “Penryn” family chips produced using 45nm process technology will have greater instructions per clock (IPC) execution, which means that they will be faster and more efficient even at the same clock-speeds with the current generation chips. Besides, the new chips will be able to run at higher clock-speeds compared to today’s Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad products.

The major micro-architectural improvements for new Intel Core 2 processors, besides SSE4 instruction set, include the so-called Unique Super Shuffle Engine and Radix 16 technique. The Super Shuffle Engine is a full-width, single-pass shuffle unit that is 128-bits wide, which can perform full-width shuffles in a single cycle. This significantly improves performance for SSE2, SSE3 and SSE4 instructions that have shuffle-like operations such as pack, unpack and wider packed shifts. This feature will increase performance for content creation, imaging, video and high-performance computing. Radix 16 technique, according to Intel, roughly doubles the divider speed over previous generations for computations used in nearly all applications. In addition, Intel also improved virtualization technology as well as added some features to dynamic acceleration technology, which is supposed to boost single-threaded applications’ performance on multi-core chips.

Each of Intel’s dual-core Penryn chips will have 410 million transistors, up significantly from 291 million of current dual-core Conroe processors, however, thanks to 45nm process technology, the chips will have die size of 107 square millimeters, down about 25% from 155 square millimeters of the Conroe.

BUY INTEL AND NVIDIA hi performance,
energy saving, low cost cpus, platforms, and video solutions.

I know you are also the drooling retard who could not even comprehend that a 2.4Ghz K10 will not actually be 485% faster than a 1.6Ghz K10, but please this is embarrassing.

There is a difference between speaking English and speaking English well. Your first sentence is poorly constructed and confusing. You should have said something like, "I guess after the disappointing K10 benchmarks...". Also "now" is redundant with "after", "english" should be capitalized, and "speachless" is really spelled as "speechless". You're welcome.

Lets laugh at the AMD fanboys. "Just wait for the next stepping! It will fix everything including the performance problems!" at this rate we'll be waiting until AMD goes BK for a decent CPU.

Oh things are just fine at AMD. Losing $1.2bn in six months is nothing to worry about.

AMD is laughable. While Intel and Nvidia launch new products that are actually faster than the competiton AMD thinks this is the wrong thing to do! They also seem to take giant leaps backwards on clock speeds when they go to a newer process. Intel moves to a new process and immediately releases faster clockspeeds. Yet AMD is stuck at 2.6ghz dual core at 65nm and 2ghz quad core on quad core. This is because AMD's yields are an abysmal 30% and we saw previously. (except for BARONMATRIX - he couldn't figure out how to use the link!)

AMD will finally get Barcelona to 2.5GHz, then shrink to 45nm and go backwards again to 2Ghz! Maybe they'd be better off staying at 90nm!

AMD BK Q2'08.

Who cares about a 3 core processor when you can buy a Q6600 now for under $300? Newegg has them for just $279. An utter bargain for the amount of processing power you get.

As Spaztic Pizza pointed out, the only reason AMD is doing this is because their yields on quad core parts are so awful.

Pat Gelsinger said "This is the right way to do quad core at 65nm" (refering to an MCM vs. a monolithic die) and he was absolutely right. The facts speak for themselves. Intel's quad core is cheap to manufacture with good yields, excellent pricing, excellent performance and available at up-to 3GHz.

the only reason AMD is doing this is because their yields on quad core parts are so awful.

I dont think so.. the reason why AMD doing that is because they know Intel cant implement that skills to their existing glued CPUs.. Im sure the Tri Cores will compete with the existing Intel glued C2Q while Quad Phenom will compete with Intel glued C2Q Penryn.

Pezal lies again! I found the following on the website of this software:

Intel defines a certain Tjunction temperature for the processor. In the case of Yonah it is 85C° or 100C°. First of all the program reads from a Model Specific Register (or MSR), and detects the Tjunction temperature. A different MSR contains the temperature data, this data is represented as Delta in C° between current temperature and Tjunction.

So the actual temperature is calculated like this 'Core Temp = Tjunction - Delta'

AMD chips report the temperature by a special register in the CPU's NB. Core Temp reads that register and uses a formula provided by AMD to calculate the current temperature. The formula is: 'Core Temp = Value - 49'.

The sensor in AMD CPUs can report temperatures between -49C and 206C.

Compared to what? AMD being stuck at 2Ghz. AMD should be sued for releasing CPUs that are so slow. A maximum of 2Ghz? That's pathetic. All with inferior IPC.

AMD will probably have to achieve something close to clock speed parity with Intel in order to compete for the performance crown

The problem? AMD is stuck at 2Ghz with 30% yields. Intel is at 3GHz with brand new 45nm process coming in November. Then the clock speeds will really ramp up.

AMD is an embarrassment to the entire IT industry, no wonder that four VPs have left recently! Their "next generation products in both GPUs and CPUs are slower than the competitors existing products! While Intel and Nvidia innovate and move the industry forward AMD tries to move backwards with it's inferior products!

when Intel was selling its netburst for 3.4GHz , they happily launched and marketed their Centrino (aka patched PIII ) starting at 900Mhz ...where the F where you then ?? : ))

Maybe you guys need a nap. I haven't heard anything saying AMD was at 30% yields. Which stepping do you mean? Which rev? And don't point to a generic link with 1996 data.

Anand's test showed that when Intel doesn't optimize (for themselves), AMD wins in SSE.
How can you say that getting 4 cores into the same envelope as two cores isn't excellent engineering?

Analysis of Christian M. Howell

Chris is my favorite AMD fanboi, mostly because I enjoy looking at his silly hat. He has distinguished himself here with his constant "grow up", "get a life" and "you are all so immature" posts, when he in fact supports Sharikou, and posts on the same blog as the rest of us. Thus he scores well in hypocrisy. According to his own write-up, he is a "screenwriter trapped in a SW developers cubicle", giving him a very high score on the delusional scale. As for intelligence, he hasn't really said anything that stupid here, but 13ring recently referred to him as BaronMatrix, which I do not know for sure he is. If that is correct, the Baron was a PLAGUE at Tom's Forums, pretty much wasting everyone's time and drawing the ire of such notables as Jumping Jack.

Thus we have in summary:
delusional rating: 10
hypocrisy rating: 6
stupidity rating: 8
Overall score: 24

Congratulations Christian M. Howell on your score of 24!

To Whom it May Concern,

I openly admit it. Our yields on Quad Core Opteron processors are terrible. This is why we are introducing Phenom processors for desktops with one, two, three and four processing cores all based on the same design.

I had our marketing department put out a press release that my devoted fan oneexpert posted here for you all to see. Isn't it amazing how I can turn our awful yields into a positive spin by 'offering customers more choice' with a press release?

While it may sound like things are going fine at AMD, it's my sad duty to report that nothing could be further from the truth. We're losing more ground to our competitor in the highly profitable server/workstation market and our graphics market share is shrinking. We're also projecting another loss in excess of $500 million.

In short, we're royally fucked. I just felt that our loyal supporters like onexpert, Sharikou and Penix deserved to know the truth.

And why all the hatred for AMD ??

Tired of their whining and BS marketing ploys. THey are the underdog...be humble and come out with products instead of flapping your marketing mouth in the wind only to look like an A hole company later.

Looking at the original link in Sharikou's post it initially looks like a sensible ideal to examine the overall customer experience rather than just who has the faster cpu. However I think the person writing it got carried away with "partnerships" due to the presentation he had just seen. I guess that was AMD's gameplan all along, or else why have it?

The problem with partnerships is that they can only carry you so far. For instance any buyer of a cpu gets a certain level of performance. Not every buyer of a cpu from a company gets the same level of partnership. For instance HP and ILM will get more of a partnership than a small company with a requirement for 10-15 machines every 3 years or so. And what about the home user who typicvally might by a new machien every 5 years ? .. they get f*ck all partnership. They are still guarranteed a level of performance though.

How do partnerships for the big firms stack up ? Well Dell, one of the speakers at the conference, had the worlds biggest single supplier partnership with Intel for a long time and gave that up as the performance of Netburst stank compared to K8. On AMD's side the previous partnership with the "channel" got junked when they had to supply loads of cpu's then to Dell. These partnerships don't seem to be as set in stone as performance do they?

If partnerships were better than performance then why did Intels profits go down when they had Netburst and then up when they had high performing Conroe even though the partnerships had disappeared for them and they were evil?

How are AMD doing financially again at the moment with worse performance but better partnerships?

No, I think that guy got carried away with what was given to him. The be all and end all is how good your product is, the partnership is the icing on the cake.

IDF is upon us, Intel will just probably talk about new technology and not too much on partnerships and I think they have that the correct way around nowadays.

News Release
VIA Launches Vista-Ready EPIA SN, Fastest Ever EPIA Mainboard
VIA EPIA SN Mini-ITX mainboard brings a number of firsts to the EPIA range, including PCI-Express, four S-ATA and the fastest ever Mini-ITX to be based on the Vista-certifiedprocessor at 1.8GHz

Taipei, Taiwan, 17 September 2007 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of PC silicon and platform solutions, today announced the VIA EPIA SN-series mainboard, the first VIA CN896 IGP chipset.

Powered by the 1.8GHz VIA C7 processor, the VIA EPIA SN provides a performance boost of up to 30% over previous VIA EPIA mainboards, while a fanless 1GHz sku is ideal for Network Attached Storage and other applications requiring passive cooling. The VIA EPIA SN is also the first to provide the added flexibility of a 16-lane PCI-Express port for bandwidth-intensive graphics cards. With four Serial ATA II ports, an Ultra DMA port, a Compact Flash connector, dual-LAN ports and wireless support, the VIA EPIA SN has the storage and network versatility to suit developers of NAS, digital signage and POS units alike.

The VIA CN896 chipset has been certified by Microsoft to guarantee a reliable and trouble free installation of Windows Vista, with its VIA Chrome9 HC integrated graphics core, designed for high performance in 2D, 3D and DirectX 9 applications, bringing MPEG-2 acceleration to deliver smooth DVD playback while minimizing impact on system resources.

Capable of supporting an unprecedented 4GB of energy-efficient DDR2 667 system memory, the VIA EPIA SN takes compact computing to new levels of system performance. Digital signage and POS developers can take advantage of expansion cards supporting DVI and LVDS displays, while the option of an additional four COM ports and a native LPC bus is important to POS vendors. Multiple native RAID configurations through 4 S-ATA channels and VIA V-RAID within the VIA VT8251 south bridge, and the inclusion of a Gigabit Ethernet port as standard make the EPIA SN series a strong contender in NAS system development.

"With the VIA EPIA SN-series we have listened to our customers and delivered a number of key technology firsts to the Mini-ITX form factor," said Daniel Wu, Assistant Vice President, VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies, Inc. "I am proud to say that VIA has again raised the bar to develop a Vista-ready mainboard that meets the ever-increasing demands of the embedded industry."

As well as the VIA PadLock Security Engine embedded within the VIA C7 processor, further security is also available through an optional TPM module. More information about the VIA EPIA Mini-ITX SN-series may be found on the VIA website at: http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/motherboards.jsp?motherboard_id=550
About the VIA EPIA SN-Series Mini-ITX Mainboard

The VIA EPIA SN-series offers substantial diversity in the compact, power-efficient platform. Twinned with the Vista-certified VIA CN896 North Bridge is the feature-packed VIA VT8251 South Bridge, offering support for the dual Ethernet ports – one Gigabit in the standard configuration with the option of dual Gigabit for project-based customers, four native Serial-ATA II ports with multiple RAID configurations through the VIA V-RAID application, a standard IDE channel, one Compact Flash Type I slot, one MiniPCI slot, up to 6 USB 2.0 and an optional Wireless IEEE 802.11b/g module. It has been rumored that intel sets out to produce all 4 core chips and that the c2ds and celerons are simply defective 4 core rejects with turned off defective silicone sections, to cut intel process loses.

How does that work oneexpert? It's rumored by you. But it's pure BS.

Intel produces millions of dual core dies. Then they package two together to produce a quad core CPU.

So given that a quad core CPU from Intel is actually two dual core die packaged together how exactly can Intel disable parts of a not existent quad core die to produce a dual core or single core CPU as you suggest?

PAUL OTELLINI, Intel's CEO, led the first keynote off here in Moscone West today.

He said silicon technology was the most important element in Intel’s future. Fifteen years ago Intel engineers realised that there was an increasing tendency to leakage using silicon oxide gates. The high k Hafnium metal gate 45 nanometre fixes that problem. Gate leakage is down by a factor of 10.

The 45 nano tech gives a threshold level of density for transistors and the power characteristics. Graphics will be introduced into CPUs in the 45 nano generation. Silverthorn cores will provide ultra mobile notebooks. Other firms have announced 45 nano tech but no one else has the Hafnium gate, said Otellini.

Four fabs each costing $4 billion will produce the number of dies that Intel anticipates it will need for 45 nanometre chips.

Intel moving to 45um before AMD fully implements 65um.

Gate leakage is down by a factor of 10.

Bolded for a good reason. Leakage is what has prevented Intel from raising clockspeeds too much over the last few years. With a tenfold reduction in leakage Intel has a lot more of headroom to play with now.

Nehalem is 731M transistors for a monolithic quad core part. This is down from a total of 820M transistors for a dual die Yorkfield quad core CPU.

Each dual core die on Yorkfield is 107mm squared. It's easy to work out that Nehalem will have a die of roughly 190mm squared. Of course this isn't perfectly accurate, it's just a few shoddy calculations.

But it does show that Intel was waiting with good reason for a manageable die size. The same design on 65nm would have been HUGE. Waiting for 45nm for monolithic quad core was the right decision for Intel to make.

Congratulations! You finally got it. You may have made yourself look like a fool in the process but that's not really important.

IDF is a pure marketing BS, you must idiots to quote what you hear there. lol ..Now do you want me to list all the BS Intel has told you in the last 20 IDFs ?? ..oops IMFs (Intel marketing Forums)

Yeah. Totally. Penryn, 45nm HK, 32nm SRAM wafers, Nehalem demo, Larrabee etc. is all marketing crap. None of it is real products is it?!

The only thing AMD owns with a 2Ghz quad core is the 'pokiest quad core CPU' award. That is when you can actually buy one. It was a paper launch alright. Axel posted on Scientia's blog. He called several OEMs and wouldn't have a Barcelona server to send him until November.

Dell has coming soon on its site for quad. No one seems to have the ubiquitous Xeon 7300 either but I guess that's OK.

Also, if he was not calling as a large customer of course he won't get it sooner.

Call and tell them you a procurement officer and you want 3000 servers and see how long they make you wait.

Do you notice how you guys just have to call people names? You make yourselves look bad arguing with yourselves as Sharikou doesn't even respond anymore.

BTW
you're such a tool as to make Jumping JagOff look like an actual person.

Holy shit, did Christian just get owned!!

It was like this EVERYDAY on Tom's Forums with Chris. He says something stupid, gets mocked by everyone else, then makes some kind of claim like "oh I'm not really serious about this stuff" or "I'm just messing with you guys". Just like now.

If this is not the definition of hypocrisy, then what is?

Chris, you will never be a screen writer. You will never be respected on any technical forum. You are a joke, a fool, a spectacle for the entertainment of others. Congrats!

And just think this is over a company that wouldn't even hire you. I've worked at Microsoft and make a high 5 figure salary so excuse me if I don't kill myself.

And BTW since you know my Tomz name use it. The thought of you saying or even writing my real name makes me sick.

I guess I won't be an enterprise software architect either. Oh wait, I already am.

You should just bother each other, you anonymous prick.

Though I am glad that you will be the next in a long line of jerks that got pushed over the edge.

A high(whatever that is, could be $51k for all I know) 5 figure salary in a technology field is absolutely nothing to brag about. Congrats on being average.

Can't stand what? I don't care much if your salary impresses you, I just wanted to make sure you understood it's not going to impress anyone else.
