Bulldozer Opterons totally frags Intel Xeon in SPEC benchmark

Some readers complain that I was quoting AMD's press release on Bulldozer Opteron's towering performance numbers. Now, the numbers have been validated and published on Spec.org. Let's have a look at the highest scores for the Bulldozer.

In SpecFp2006_rate, a 2P Bulldozer Opteron server achieves a score of 403. Simply put, there is no 2P Xeon can match this score.

In SpecInt2006_rate, a 2P Bulldozer gets a score of 543. This is almost 30% higher than a 2P Xeon X5690.

Some readers say it's not fair to compare the 16-core Opteron to the 6-core/12 thread Xeon. They missed the whole point of measuring performance per watt. The 6-core Xeon consumes 130watts. The 16-core Opteron consumes the same amount of power. With more cores, the Opteron can simply do more within the same thermal footprint.

How will Intelers argue against these hard numbers?

They resort to the usual low IQ, low education ad hominem attacks. Just read their comments on my blog, and see how low they are.

Sharikou. You missed the whole point. Whether your statements make sense or not. You are already branded as an irrelevant troll.

People come here for entertainment and not for information.

For starters, your use of words such as "frags", "destroys", "towering" and all that exaggerations do not exude professional journalism and makes you look more amateurish. Journalism does not hold biases that make statements such as your infamous "Intel BK 20xx", or "Fake Quad Cores"... neither does your Cut and Paste modus.

My suggestion and I say this with my deepest respect. Trash Sharikou and start fresh and learn from these lessons because lets face it, unless you truly enjoy the (negative) attention, Sharikou is a joke.

Dude, if you think Sharkookoo is a joke, then what do you call those dolts who defend him? I agree, no one takes him seriously. He does not even link his "other" published works!

I do get a nice laugh just by going here though, I don't want him gone! I don't read the comics page any more while drinking my morning coffee.

You're absolutely right. AMD has some hidden potential most people don't appreciate, because it sucks in games. Well, if all you do on computer is gaming, by all means, go Intel. But AMD offers comparable or better performance for WORK related tasks. And that's what professionals need.

What on earth are you talking about??? Do you know what you are saying? AMD does not suck in games, all you need is a good Graphics card.

But BD gets beaten in After Effects, Vegas, Maya, Premiere and Cinema4D, and by a good margin! In VRay and Maxwell Render, the BD loses just a little. Why do I know? Coz I use them at WORK.

BD is cheap enough for gamers. For the general consumer-work space, Intel 2600K with OC is incredibly hard to beat.

OMG Sharikou. You question other’s IQ when you yourself present artificial benches as definitive proof? Good god man, evaluate applicable serverspace benches such as Oracle Charbench, VMmark, and Mental Ray. Personally, the best server bench would be running several VMs, each running a copy of MySQL benchmark Suite. Honestly, I have a clear idea which platform wins.

If you are truly a PhD as you claim, your level of intelligence and expertise would have noted the validity of such scores. Unfortunately, your statements validate my suspicion that you are incompetent in any technological evaluation or commentary.

Did I penetrate you too hard? Too fast? Not fast enough?

Did you swallow too much? Was it too warm? Too cold? Too viscuous?

Okay, Mr. PhD... Quote SpecInt, quote SpecFP, hell, even quote LINPACK and 7-zip.

Now do SQL, Adobe CS Suite, Autodesk Suite, Active Directory services, VMWare, Blender, ZBrush, C-Ray, heck EVERYTHING ELSE with the SB platform... Stop making comparisons with Intel's 4-year old previous CPU generation.

BTW, LINPACK was done with AMD Math, ever tried the new LINPACK on SB with the Intel lib? It's wicked. Do you even comprehend the point I'm making?

And you think people who don't agree with you are low IQ Intellers? Think again, now wait, don't do that...

You might hurt yourself.

"Bulldozer Opterons TOTALLY FRAGS Intel Xeon in SPEC benchmark"

And your conclusion iiiiissssss....?

Lemme guess and I'm actually referencing your previous statements (except, MAYBE, for #2):

(1) Buy AMD Stock
(2) Intel BK 2012
(3) AMD is the MORAL minority
(4) If all you do is run artificial benches for work and play, go AMD!!!!

Outstanding. Truly in-depth technical journalism... NOT!

Also, to the other Anonymous:

"Anand did, and AMD fragged Intel in many of those tests"

Huh? the Anand reviews covered both Desktop and Server parts. They even went to disable CMT to make the AMD parts go *faster*. They even noted that the multithreaded Cinebench as not a fair indicator of performance for AMD. If you DID READ the reviews, you'd see that Anand himself wished that BD delivered as promised because he didn't want an Intel-dictated market.

I wish these defenders of Sharikou actually did the research and not blindly blurt baseless posts.

Cheers

That was exactly my point. I was checking the site and saw reviews for both server and consumer CPUs. I believe the desktop part performed worse.

You only posted a single bench. proving a point by handpicking one bench is also considered trolling.

i do agree that xeons are expensive. i just wish that AMD had stronger offerings, the kind that gave birth to the price wars and the excellent Q6600. like anand said, we need a stronger AMD.

OTOH. The OTHER poster was trolling and vague, it obviously didnt do its homework. It has the same goal-changing modus operandi that sharikoo does so i would not be surprised if it was him.

Good read though. full of entertainment value. other than that, go to the real review sites.

Server or Desktop, Desktop or Server, Server only or Desktop only, any way you put it, at any comprehensive bench suite you check, most of them will favor Intel. Face it, BD is a meh product and better luck next time with Trinity or Piledriver, that is, if the AMD spin does not fuck us all up. Again.

Of course, there's gonna be Haswell.

Hello from Bao from Taipei:

after the tested for mainboard Supermicro of 2x 6276 with , I sugest when working on 3DS Max or all the Autodesk it is software. Stay away from the now AMD, you have bad numbers when CMT is enable. With CMT disable the numbers still low and you pay full price for half the contained cores.

I am disappointed.

Asshat,

Check this out

AMD's Bulldozer server benchmarks are here, and they're a catastrophe

http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2011/11/bulldozer-server-benchmarks-are-here-and-theyre-a-
catastrophe.ars

Interlagos fails to deliver any substantive positive message to the market, other that incompetence.

"Not only will Intel be able to extend its lead in the areas that it already wins; it should be able to leapfrog AMD in those tests where it currently trails. Again, one can't help but feel that a hypothetical 16-core Magny-Cours would have been a better option.

After the poor desktop performance, the possibility still existed that the Bulldozer architecture would start to make sense once we could see the server performance. Now the benchmarks have arrived, AMD's perseverance with Bulldozer is bordering on the incomprehensible. There's just no upside to the decisions AMD has made. All of which raises a question: why did AMD go this route? The company must have known about the weak single-threaded performance and the detrimental effect this would have in real-world applications long before the product actually shipped, so why stick with it? Perhaps AMD's anticipation of high clock speeds caused the company to stick with the design, and there's still a possibility that it might one day attain those clock speeds—but we've seen AMD's arch-competitor, Intel, make a similar gamble with the Pentium 4, and for Intel, it never really paid off.

AMD is boasting that Opteron 6200 is the "first and only" 16-core x86 processor on the market. Not only is this not really true (equating threads and cores is playing fast and loose with the truth), it just doesn't matter. In its effort to add all those "cores," performance has been"

Complete and utter garbage.

AMD "fragged" and PWNED again.

LMFAO
