AMD's Netbook APU Supports Virtualization!

I am running VirtualBox on the Acer Aspire 722 netbook to host some VMs, and am surprised to find that the tiny Ontario APU actually supports not only 64 bit but also AMD-V!! This allows my Windows VM to run in dual core mode.

I think the APU supports nested paging also.

This is great.

In comparison, Intel's stuff is a crap. A Intel based notebook I bought last year has some important visualization feature missing. Now, the tiny Acer netbook with AMD will accompany me in my travels -- it is not super fast, but it has all the important features.

It will take Intel at least two more years to catch up with the current AMD technology.

Although I take the opposite viewpoint on Sharikou ever since I owned an FX55 and then when Conroe I do think some of the comments from the Intel crowd on this blog are very childish and not likely to gainer any support.

You need to win an argument by being adult and not the nine year olds in the playground.

It does look like the Ati buy was a lifeline for AMD after they paid too much for it and suffered for a couple or 3 years. Their mid range cpu with graphics does seem a better bet at the moment.

I hope the new FX range is good as well once they have done another spin, I like a bit of competition wallet wise.

Not only is AMD demonstrating that they are supply a superior product in the present day, but that they are also better positioned than the competition for future growth trends.

"AMD stock seem have only one way to go: UP!" - Shiradouche, July 22, 2011.

In the last month, their stock has lost $0.60. In the last quarter, the stock has lost $1.90. Funny enough, over the last year, it's only lost about $0.80. But five years ago? It's down $13.

Doesn't seem like the only way to go was truly up -- looks like down was still a solid option, too.

7:11 AM, August 23, 2011
Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you search for that sentence in Google, you'll find the original ZDnet.UK article that was quoted. From the same article:

Intel maintained its dominance in server processors, finishing the quarter with a 94.5-percent market share thanks to a 0.6-percent rise in shipments. Intel’s main server processor is the Xeon. it released the Sandy Bridge-based Xeon E7, formerly codenamed Westmere-EX, at the beginning of April, and this drove shipments in the second quarter.

[quote from Intel PR dude omitted]

AMD held 5.5 percent of the server market, down 0.6 percent on the previous quarter, according to IDC.

This shouldn't surprise anyone, but server processors are where the money is. Desktop and laptop parts are cheap; the margins on these parts are single-digit percentages unless you're at the top end of the spectrum (and AMD isn't.)

The server processors and associated motherboards have incredible margins, many times they're triple digit percentage points. And because Intel completely owns everyone and everything in that space, they will continue to utterly dominate AMD's position in the CPU world.

Let's see...

Yes, by now everyone knows its better to sell 1 Bentley than 200,000 VWs...because profit margin is much higher, lol

I'm not sure what you're getting at, but let's go with your example: what is cheaper to manufacure? 200,000 VW Golfs? Or a single Bentley Continental Flying Spur?

The reality of the situation is this: Intels' gross profit margin is almost 50% higher than AMD's. Their total fab capacity (which is their own, they don't outsource it at a cost) is bigger than AMD's. Intel could stop selling 1/3rd of their chips and continue making almost 30 times more profit than AMD.

Get your head around this: Intel's profit from Q2 2011 (not total sales, JUST profit) was 3/4ths of AMD's entire market capitalization. One year of Intel's profit would buy AMD and NVIDIA and still have more than two billion dollars left to show for it.

The reason they're this big? Because they have chips that are actually worth buying, and can be sold at an actual profit. Chips that are expensive and only interesting to the lowest common denominator might sell in decent quantities, but you're only going to barely scrape by for profit.

5 Reasons Why Intel Is Being Pushed Against The Wall By AMD

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-reasons-intel-pushed-wall-amd/

5:58 AM, September 03, 2011
Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Being Pushed against the wall by AMD"? Really?

I'm sure that I can understand why you'd grasp at that straw, not unlike a drowning man grasping at the last flashing images of a piece of cloth in a desperate hope that it's actually a flotation device. Sadly, someone's self-righteous editorial page (like this blog, or the editorial link above) does not make that person's fantasy a reality.

Howabout some reality that isn't editorialized copies of AMDs press material? Investor return on AMD last year alone was NEGATIVE 15.5%, Intel's was 6.3% in the black. AMD's growth rate over the last full decade was NEGATIVE 14%, so obviously last year was only slightly worse than average for them. Intel's last decade? 2.9% in the black, so last year happened to be a better than average year. Guess what?

There's no 'pushing' going on, especially with Intel's profits SOARING over the last three quarters, while AMD is essentially treading water -- gaining small ground in the lowest-cost markets, but losing highly prized ground in the enterprise markets where profit margins are huge and where R&D costs are recouped.

The need for both Intel and AMD to exist is undeniable, but pushing is a non-issue at this point. If there is going to be a shoving match, it is far more likely to be ARM versus Intel. ARM provides a lower power point that anything Intel has available, and with a higher performance per watt at those levels. Intel has real reason to be concerned about ARM, and accordingly is spending billions of dollars on research into lower and lower powered X86 devices.

8.5GHz Bulldozer

9:49 AM, September 13, 2011
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Right. 8.5ghz. I'll raise the bullshit flag without even clicking the link.

As to the post above that one...again right. Because by using a processor that is slower, and less efficient at multitasking operations, and generally just a bad processor all around, I'll get my work done faster. Sure.

Do yourself a favor - learn the phrase "Do you want fry's with that?" I've fired people with more tech savvy than you...you would last all of 2 minutes in an interview with me before I wrote you off and became uninterested. If that long...

3:40 PM, September 13, 2011
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually, the 8.5Ghz claim is quite believable given the circumstances. Liquid helium cooling, applied to an incredibly stringent set of eight hand-picked dies. Overclocked by one of the worlds foremost overclockers, and overseen by AMD engineers to help with selection of the chips and whatever other resources.

I'm not dubious of their claim one iota. But ultimately, it's still a useless benchmark. Great, when you're seven degrees centigrade over absolute zero and running over 2v to the core, you can achieve just enough uptime on the OS to achieve the record. But what does that offer ME, as a consumer, when I want to buy this chip for my desktop?

I want to know what I can do with "sane" cooling -- you know, a heatsink and fan? Sure, an oversized one with pipes and copper and shit, but a cooling system that isn't based off liquid; especially based on a liquid that is normally in it's gaseous state at 100* below room temperature.

I want to know what I can do with *sane* voltage -- you know, something where more than 60 seconds of use doesn't arc-weld the processor into a singular metal wad.

How much does it cost? How much can I overclock it using parts that I purchase through NewEgg? How much did they fix the broken turbo function? Is it able to even remotely compete with the perf/watt of Sandy Bridge or the very-very-soon-to-be-released Ivy bridge platforms? Is it able to compete with the perf / $$ that SB and IB can provide?

To bring out the inevitable car comparison: It is very entertaining to watch AUDI run their American Le Mans turbo diesel LMP1 cars and kick a lot of ass. Unfortunately, as a consumer in the United States where Audi only sells a very small 4-banger turbodiesel, it's meaningless for me to put them on a pedestal for a function that has no equal to anything I can obtain. If I had a way to buy a 700HP, 2000ft/lb TQ car for my daily drive, perhaps it would be more meaningful. Not that I would buy it, or even, could afford it. I'd be quite happy with the R8 V10 though :)

This is all good showmanship, to be sure. But it's irrelevant for the purchasing public. Want to wow me? Show me a 5Ghz bulldozer on air and stock volts. I'm not against giving AMD some kudos where it's relevant to me; 8.5Ghz overclocks just really don't interest me though. Sorry.

What is wrong? Why are you not coming out and defending your "honour".

Let's see. Wasn't it you who said:

"AMD should just get Rick Bergman as CEO"

Well, Rick knew better than to stick around.

Matter of fact, lost of design engineers at AMD have pretty much left in disgust.

Did you really think that AMD had the capacity to truly "innovate" itself out of the paper bag that it's in?

What kind of margins do you think AMD is going to make from low yielding BD and low yielding Llanos?

That's right, asshat. Between mobo makers and OEMs and everyone in between left hanging on BD, Llano, and other parts from the Dresden manufacturing arm, you've got the makings of a holiday profit bash...for Intel and Nvidia.

Mighty "fragged" by your own beliefs, stupidity, and blind faith.

Get your next round of kneepads and tucks ready. You are going to need them.

Asshat

So, it turns out that there's a serious flaw in the Bulldozer L1 cache design that requires updates to the Windows and Linux OS kernels to avoid a ~10% performance penalty on single threaded apps (and reportedly, even more penalty on multi-threaded apps.)

However, Linus Torvalds (founder of the Linux operating system) has serious complaints with the fix:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/1170744

If you don't understand the techno-geekdom going on there, his main problem is with how the memory pages are tagged and moved. In this method, the memory mapped page locations for a given application would no longer be randomized (ASLR) which means enabling this 'fix' could result in major security holes.

So, for a platform that was designed for a server role, obtaining maximum performance means stripping page randomization and thus allowing severe security vulnerabilities.

Now you're started to get the idea why all those engineers left AMD. This is a seriously dumb thing to do...

Uh, so your retort is that Intel can't build a DX10 video card. Yeah, oooooh, wow man what a burn. And that 3% came from AMD's press release, not the people actually doing the work on the kernel repairs. But I'm glad you believe AMD over the people who write the operating systems; that certainly makes logical sense!

Howabout this retort: AMD can't sell a functioning processor to anyone needing a secure server. Here's a little rhetorical question for you: where is all the money made in processor sales? Is it the 2% margins made on the slowest, cheapest stuff that you sell to customers as part of a $299 deal on a desktop? Or the 100%+ margins made on an $80,000 rack-mounted server chassis?

Go ahead, lol and 'pwn' all you like at Intel's video chipset. They will laugh with you all the way to the bank to deposit their next several billion dollars worth of server sales that AMD just handed them on a silver platter.

I'd suggest you drop the charade before you make an even bigger fool of yourself.

Someone in Russia was able to purchase an FX-8150 (eight core, eight thread, 3.6Ghz Base -> 4.2Ghz Turbo) and run it through some benches. This is NOT an ES chip, it's an actual unit from a store that allowed him to purchase it early.

He slapped the FX on an Asus Corsshair V Formula board, an NVIDIA 580 GTX, 4Gb of 2.2Ghz CL8 ram, and Win7 SP1 64-bit. He also tested it against an i7-2600k on an Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z board with all the same components.

The i7-2600k came out faster in every test; the worst for the AMD was an almost 50% loss to the i7-2600k in floating point output using the Everest SinJulia benchmark.

The one place where the 8150 came out 30% higher than the i7-2600k? Power consumption. Ouch.

Bring your favorite Russian web translator, and if you're an AMD fanboy, also bring a box of kleenex: http://lab501.ro/procesoare-chipseturi/amd-fx-8150-bulldozer-preview

Sounds like the 10% loss in performance mentioned above may have been truly inaccurate, but not for in the direction that the AMD followers had hoped.

I am very sad :( In times when we really need competition to drive prices down, AMD releases CPU that has almost 2x transistors than Sandy Bridge 4C and die area that is HUGE, and yet it's performance is short of disastrous... So much for "HT done right" and other marketing bs.

Real sad, no wonder their previuos CEO Dirk was given the boot, total incompetence by AMD.

Intel has publicly stated that 22nm trigate technology coming in Ivy Bridge can either drive a 50% power drop or approximately 50% performance increase versus existing 32nm lithography. Obviously there is some ability to move the 'slider' between those points for the balance that's most necessary for the chip being built.

Basically, even the most optimistic AMD fanboy would be faced with the fact that Intel has a combination of a 18-month lead on lithography along with (at least) an 18-month lead on processor architecture -- an architecture that isn't dependent on OS kernel modification to be fully effective.

Even today, every impartially available measuring stick (perf/mm, perf/watt, total perf available, total wattage consumed, total die size) shows Intel CPU's walloping AMD's CPU's at this point. We can argue about video support until we're blue in the face, but no enthusiast (nor any server market) is going to care about the onboard video -- enthusiasts will buy an aftermarket card, and servers will just turn the damn thing off.

Thus, the only people who are going to care about the video are folks who are buying low-cost desktops and laptops. And those are probably the people who aren't going to care a whole lot about maximum video performance because, if they really cared, they'd buy a standalone card too.

Given the massive concessions that AMD has just given to Intel, Ivy Bridge on the new 22nm trigate lithography and the continued enhancement of SB is going to drop like Tsar Bomba (google it) on Bulldozer.
