AMD Shanghai Slaughters Intel in SpecInt_rate
It is common knowledge in the IT profession that AMD (16 core: 210) kills Intel (24 core: 155) in floating point (FP) performance. What is little unknown is that AMD slaughters Intel with Shanghai.
A 2P 8 core 2.7GHz AMD Shanghai white box server scores 136 in SpecInt_rate 2006.
In comparison, a 2P 8 core Intel Xeon 2.83GHz Dell PowerEdge 2950 scores 134.
A 4p 16 core 2.7GHz AMD Shanghai white box server scores 249 in SpecInt_rate 2006.
A 4p 16 core 2.4 GHz Intel DELL PE R900 scores 219.
Even Intel's weird 6 core chip is no match to Shanghai. As for Intel's copycat chip Nahelem, it won't be available until later 2009, as Intel is still struggling with some cache coherence issues in 2P configurations.
Our reader pointed out that IBM achieved a massive score in Enterprise Java performance... It is so good-- beating a 24 core Intel server by 40%, it's scary.
In addition, AMD's Shanghai chip consumes only 75 watts. Intel's is up to 170 watts.
The AMD chip is designed for VM. In Virtualization performance, the 4P 16 core Shanghai is about 45% better than Intel's 4P 16 core. The Shanghai also beats the 4P 24 core Intel Dunnington system.
