Socket AM2 gaming performance gets 19% boost

LegitReviews found that by upgrading to 4GB PC2-6400 memory with CL3 timings, socket AM2's DOOM3 performance increases by 18.7%.

firingsquad.com found that increasing L2 cache size by 512KB led to 5% gaming performance increase.

This test includes Athlon 64 AM2 performance under Windows x64, very impressive.

Mr. Simpi over at Anandtech found very little improvement... Any ideas why? (Maybe Intel ran the benchmarks and sent him the results??) ;-)

Sharikou: What's your take on those review sites such as Tom's Hardware, Anandtech, 2cpu, etc.?

Intel looks like they will be massively undercutting AMD prices

Going to be tought for AMD to keep the ASP up I think ?

Anand is pretty much a paid Intel pumper. I made this conclusion back when he did the first Dempsey bechmark.

I knew Socket AM2 provided 20% improvement if you use decent timing RAM, and those aren't even the best (imagine 2-2-2-5 or 3-2-2-8 like Conroe). You could EASILY see 25% improvements and that's just from a change of RAM, and now look at Conroe....Conroe is nothing more than a wannabe K8, it shows now that AT MOST, Conroe is 5-10% faster than a 3-year-old K8 architecture....that's sad people, I don't care what way you look at it....that's sad.

first link: the only thing it proves without a doubt is memory latency, memory speed, and memory size MATTER (which we all pretty much new before hand). it does not compare to ANYTHING. so you can't legitimately (sp?) conclude anything about being faster that socket 939 processors by a large amount.

second link: what does this have to do with am2, or is it just me?

explain this for me: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/socket_am2_chipset_showdown/page11.asp

and http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/amd_athlon_64_fx_62_5000/

hardly an increase at all over equivalently clocked socket 939 processors, what a surprise. after all, the only thing they change was the memory controller and decrease the tdp.

what does this have to do with am2

The Conroe results we have seen have 3-2-2-8 timings. The AM2 results done by Anandtech has 4-4-4-12 timings.

The second tests show that games are very cache sensitive.

Conroe has also been using DDR2-667 vs DDR2-800 for AM2. Benchmarks would suggest DDR2-800 is lower latency and higher bandwidth than DDR2-667 even with 2-2-2 timings.

why everyone is complaining about am2 as not having any major performance increace????
Have AMD hyped that socket? have they told everyone everyday, that here we are readying something unbelievable? No. they said, that am2 is a transition to ddr2, with possibility to upgrade to quad core(then these are out).
In my opinion AM2 is a success, because those cpus are with smalled tdp, and socket is future proof.
So please stop crying about how AMD 'mislead' everyone.
The only misleadings are articles stating how amd disapointed everyone.
Besides today I read the Dtech article about socket f and conroe release dates.
The most interesting quote was:
'AMD will introduce its widely hyped LGA 1207-pin Socket on July 11, followed by Intel's introduction of its widely hyped Core 2 Duo Conroe processor on July 23'.
Oh common get a grip.I don't know about everyone else, but have amd hyped their socket f opterons?
They were quite as mise about everything. In my opinion, media is hyping amd new releases, while intel is hyping their releases themselves.
And I'm preaty sure those two things are very different [;

P.S. Thanks sharikou for this blog.Though sometimes some statements sound like you are AMD PR(but from intel PR school :) ), but most of the times I find those articles very informative [;
And for those who think that conroe will kill amd, just wait a bit [;

we had louds of profets in our time [;

I've taken the liberty (Link) to pull together AMD's transition to DDR2 and its performance. People have been getting excited over false claims from website reviewers without facts; I present them in full.
